Societas. It’s the Latin word for friendship. It’s more than that: it’s the word for partnership—for reaching out into the world and giving something back. Societas, the music label founded in 2009 by Sanguine Recordings owners Emily Griffin and Gabriel Elash, is just that: a new vehicle for musicians to engage more deeply with their communities, beyond the sheltered confines of the music industry.
The seeds for Societas were sown when Sanguine’s co-founders watched a dear friend succumb to cancer in 2008. With one successful label already in operation, they began to ask: What real impact can music have? What is the real meaning of change? And so sprang Societas, a charitable-giving music label that focuses, like its sister Sanguine, on forward-thinking dance and electronic artists.
Societas enables artists to raise money for the social services of their choice. Artists dig into their treasure vaults (or, at least, their gigantic hard drives) to donate previously unreleased material to Societas. The label then contributes 100% of the release’s profits to a charity selected by the artist. Because Societas is an all-digital music label—distributed to such retail partners as iTunes, Zune, Rhapsody, eMusic, Sprint, and others—more sales dollars go straight to charitable contributions, rather than production costs. Societas also works with the charitable organizations to promote their services and develop awareness of their causes. Societas: Real music, making real connections.
